"How will great work rise above the noise to capture the imaginations and heart of millions rather than just delight hundreds?"

Why does it have to? If you can produce enough quality content to entice a thousand people into giving you one day's wages a year, you can have a career as a content creator.

If you can produce enough quality content to entice ten thousand people into giving you twenty dollars a year, then you can have a career as a content creators.

With so many middlemen being cut out of the process, content creators don't have to sell to millions to making a living doing what they love.

I think your point about mystery, romance and business writers shows that this isn't a new phenomenon. Niche has always been a viable business model and writers who are good at self-promotion have always had a leg up on the competition. Technology has simply made it easier to make a connection between the two, and for writers to go it alone it the have enough business savvy.

What's suffering the most are the big conglomerates who thought scaling up was the answer and are now crumbling under their own weight.
